Choosing Your Server

If you own a website, especially an ecommerce or business website, you need to choose your web hosting wisely. Because the web hosting service runs, and ultimately chooses the server your website will be placed on, the right choice will be imperative for your sites future success. One thing you will want to consider is how much space on this server you actually want to use.

If you use a dedicated server for your hosting needs, this means you basically have the whole server to yourself. One great advantage of this is that you will be the only one using resources from this server. Going down this route though is fairly expensive when it comes to the monthly fees. A shared server is much cheaper than a dedicated one, often only costing a few dollars a month, but as the name itself implies, you share the space and resource with many other users and their websites.

Choosing the option of a private virtual server though is like making the most of both dedicated and shared servers. The server in question is partitioned, and as such you as a client get an entire partition to yourself. This then has the added advantage of not only being cheaper, but also other clients of the web host will not be able to use the resources that have been allocated for your use.

Virtual private servers also allow you to make sandboxes and honeypots. When you have done this, you can then test any new features or resources while keeping the main part of your site secure. You are able to use one of the partitions you acquire for your main site and another as your backup. New software releases can then be tested in this sandbox and transferred to the mains site once verified. Also, if there happens to be a security issue, the second partition can be used as the trap. It may appear like the normal site, but all important files will be missing from it.
